Darius Antonides is my 9 year old nephew and was born with PVR which is multiple brain lesions. This is a birth defect that affects many pre mature babies. Darius was born at 23 weeks gestation. Today with the devotion and dedication of the St. Elizabeth Hospital NICU team and his parents, he is still living. Most children with PVL do not live past to be 9 years old. There is no cure.
Darius has multiple seisures and has cerebral palsey. During the night he has to wear an apnea monitor to alert his mother and father when he stops breathing so they can revive him.
Stephanie and Greg have had to fight many battles just to get an Apnea machine paid for by Medicaid and Medicare to keep Darius alive. Without it, he surely would have died in his sleep from sudden infant death.
Team Darius was started by Darius' mother Stephanie because one of Darius' school mates called him 'seizure boy' at school. Darius came home and wanted to know if people didn't like him because he has seizures. Stephanie was determined to show Darius there were many people in the world who love him and the seizures don't make them stop loving him. Team Darius has evolved into the first PVL Charity to help families of children with PVL.
